Style

Choose The Right Style....

Chances are you will only roof once, so your best choice is an informed choice. You may find that a little more money buys a lot more shingles and the difference can pay for itself in long-term performance and the resale value of your home.

Three-tab shingles are the roofing industry's standard, consisting of two layers of asphalt around a fiberglass mat core. Each shingle is notched into 3 integrated pieces or tabs.

Laminated shingles (architectural quality shingles) are created by bonding two asphalt shingles together, giving a distinct three-dimensional appearance. Laminates are generally heavier in weight, and allow for greater design flexibility.

Warning Signs

If your roof is over 15 years old, or shows any signs of these warning signs.... You may already have a problem.

1. Ceiling Spots

  • Caused by leaks in roof
  • Check attic or crawl space for leaks in deck
  • Check chimney and vents for cracks in the flashing.
  • Check rafters for leaks that "travel" away from the original source
  • Check eaves for water backing up from ice dams
  • Check roof for damaged shingles

2. Damaged Flashing

  • Caused by improper insulation (on new roof)
  • Caused by drying and cracking (on old roof)
  • Can sometimes be repaired without replacing the roof

3. Missing Shingles

  • Caused by improper fastening
  • Caused by exposure to high winds
  • Can usually be replaced individually

4. And 5. Buckling and Curling

  • Caused by improperly applied felt (buckling)
  • Caused by movement in deck (bucking)
  • Caused by under-saturation of asphalt felt (curling)

6. Blistering

  • Caused by application over wet deck
  • Caused by moisture in shingle

7. Algae Growth

  • Caused by growth of air-borne algae deposited on roof
  • Appearance problem that does not affect the service life of the roofing material
  • Occurs most often in warm humid climates such as the southeast (where algae-resistant shingles are available)

8. Missing Granules

  • Normally a certain number of granules will be loose, especially after application
  • On aging shingles, indicates need for replacement

9. Rotting

  • Caused by absorption of moisture by mat at the core of the shingle
  • Common problem with organic-based shingles

FAQs

How long has the contractor been in business?

It should be in business for at least 3 years, but experience grows with time (Boak and Sons has been in business for over 26 years).

Does the contractor meet local legal requirements for licensing and insurance?

Numerous cities and townships require registration, and a good company should have liability insurance (Boak and Sons does).

Who does your work, do you use subcontractors?

It is usually better to have a company with its own employees because the control and quality is better (Boak and Sons does this).

Are your employees covered under workman's compensation insurance?

This is very important and should be in writing on your contract. This is to protect you if a worker gets hurt on the job (Boak and Sons does this).

What kind of labor warranty do you give and how long is it?

Most labor warranties should be at least three years and it is only as good as the company that gives it. Ones that have been in business for an extended period of time are your best bet. Boak and Sons gives a five year warranty.

Is it O.K. to cover over old shingles?

It is much easier and faster to cover over old shingles, but Boak and Sons does not. This is because most of the time the flashing, the pipe boots, and the vallies do not get the attention they need. Bad or wet wood stays hidden to make a nice home for ants and termites. Covering old shingles does not stop them from deteriorating or decaying. We feel it is best not to cover old shingles.

How do your employees get paid?

Most roofers get paid by the square, how many shingles, or how much siding they do a day. But we found at Boak and Sons paying by the hour generates the highest quality of work and less chance of problems down the road. Remember you get what you pay for.

Do you belong to the Better Business Bureau and Home Builders Association?

It is important to belong to the Better Business Bureau to let people know your track record. Not that you have never made a mistake, but did you fix that mistake? Boak and Sons has belonged to the Better Business Bureau for many years.

How do you know you are dealing with a good company?

We feel that you need to check for workman's compensation, with the Better Business Bureau, and the company's place of business to see if they have a building, office, trucks, and equipment to take care of your job as well as it should be. Boak and Sons has just built a new office and warehouse on Victoria Road. We have outgrown the office and warehouse we have had for the last 16 years. Boak and Sons strives to be a service-oriented company, to serve our customers.

What do you do with old shingles taken off of my house?

It is important that the contractor cleans everything up and hauls everything away. Some companies have big dumpsters dropped off in their customers yards or driveways. This can be a problem with blocking the driveway for sometimes over a week before it is picked up. Sometimes they leave big marks on the driveway. Boak and Sons uses their own dump truck to haul the trash away.
